There are actually numerous and varied grants sponsored by the government that have been made available in previous years. Even more surprising is the fact that many people are unaware of their existence and those that have heard about them have no idea how to qualify or apply. Out of all the available grant programs, single-parent grants are among the most overlooked.
Sub-Groups
The various grant packages are categorized into a few differing sub-groups. There are some for single mothers who wish to earn a college degree, find help paying astronomical winter gas bills, pay for hospital bills, or help with child care.
General Qualifications
In order to qualify for one of the above government grant programs for single moms, you of course must be classified as a single parent. You must also be a United State’s citizen. Remember, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada are the top three countries that offer this kind of financial help.
As a United State’s resident, you will need a social security number and paper proof that shows you are the custodial parent of the children in your household. And if you are applying for a race-based special grant, such as one for Native Americans, you will need to supply proof of your tribal membership. The following are two of the most common government programs.
TANF
TANF, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, is a well-known government program. This grant program was intended to be a type of short-term emergency assistance program that helps single parents provide for their children when the non-custodial parent is not paying child support.
Section 8
The other popular United States government grant program is generally referred to as Section 8 Vouchers or simply “Section 8.” This kind of program is given to people at the local-government level. If you meet the qualifications for this grant assistance program, you will be placed on your county or city’s waiting list – if there is one – until housing becomes available. Your monthly rent will be based on your net income.
